Small Spaces – Live Large!

By Craig O'Dell

“Everything is bigger in Texas!” Well, not everything! While some of our clients live in gargantuan houses, that cannot be said of everyone we work with. Living in a small space and being enveloped in a comfortable, cozy space with all of my favorite things is a preference for me and I’m a firm believer that one can live large in a small space. Here are a few tips for maximizing your space when your space in minimal.

  1. Buy furniture pieces that do double (or triple) duty. You may not have room for a cocktail table, additional storage AND extra seating so why not buy an upholstered storage ottoman that serves all three purposes? Or what about a small table that can be used for dinner at home, but can also be re-purposed for a home work space? If you’re living in a studio apartment you can even buy a daybed that works as a sofa during the day and a place to rest your weary head at night.
  2. Smaller isn’t always better. Conventional wisdom might dictate that putting smaller pieces in a room will make your space FEEL bigger, but a well-chosen, larger piece may be just the thing you need to give your room much-needed focal point or statement piece. This is true of furniture as well as art.
  3. More is more. Trust me, this is purely an issue of preference. I have never been accused of being a minimalist. I like the eye to be able travel to different areas of the room and ALWAYS give myself or my guests something interesting to look at. Well placed accessories or art can be curated in a room in such a way that the room isn’t overwhelmed or feel like a flea market. Practice makes perfect. And don’t be afraid to experiment.
  4. Edit, edit, edit. Now I know this may sound like I’m contradicting myself, but stay with me. Once you’ve achieved your “look” you will inevitably make new purchases or acquire new things. That’s fine. A good rule to avoid getting overrun with stuff is “For every new thing that comes in, something old must go”. This will keep things fresh and will help you avoid being on an episode of “Hoarders”.
  5. Finally, be fearless! I don’t mean go crazy and start knocking down walls or adding a second floor but don’t be afraid to experiment. Painting your small space an amazing color might just be the answer. In the last few years there have been wallpapers created for the express purpose of rental properties. They go up easily and come down without a trace of evidence that they were ever there.

If you live in a small space, celebrate it! Make it your own! Make it work!

Design is Like Fashion

By Brandon Beene

Design is like fashion. Everyone’s style and perspective about it is unique and personal. Some people have very conservative taste and some people have eclectic. choosing a casual style like Diane Keaton to symbolize casual interior designNot everyone is a Diane Keaton on the runway, and not everyone is a Sarah Jessica Parker.

We all have different tastes. But no one wants to walk into a room and find that they are wearing the exact same thing as someone else.

So why would you want to walk into your room and find it designed and styled the very same as your next door neighbor? Your room and home should be personal and original to you. Yes, there are design rules and techniques to follow; but there is no wrong way when it comes to your personal taste. Design should represent what you are drawn to as a person.

Color, fabric, texture, scale, collectables, furniture, art can all come together in a way that fills a room and makes it unique to you. So don’t be afraid to be yourself. Take risks. Or don’t. Do the unexpected. Or don’t. Choose it soft and comfortable or paint it loud and dramatic. But do you. It’s your room. And it’s OK to get someone to help you do that.

Even the one’s walking the Red Carpet have a stylist.

It’s fall, y’all!

NEST Candles at Decor to Your Door

By Craig O'Dell

Fall (or as we call it here in Texas – Summer Part 2) is almost here! It’s my favorite time of year. Admittedly, we don’t have as much of the fall colors as other parts of the country, but it’s still a great time with football, cooler temps and all things pumpkin spice.

The term “nesting” didn’t come to my consciousness until shortly after 9/11 in 2001. The country had just experienced such tragedy and many people were fearful to leave their homes and were really taking stock of the things that mattered to them most. People that hadn’t previously put much thought into their home were now making the place they felt the most safe a little more comfortable and a little more beautiful.

Fall makes me want to “nest.” I want to change out pillows and maybe buy a new throw for the sofa. Those cool, summer scent candles get replaced by warmer, cozier scents. (And I’m not going to lie. I want to BAKE things!) Now, at this point you may be expecting some “shameless plug” about how Decor To Your Door has great pillows, throws and the perfect fall scent candles, and I HATE to disappoint. So……. allow me to tell you that we are now a proud retailer of NEST Candles! We are LOVING these candles. The 8.1 oz. candles have 50-60 hours of burn time. We currently have Grapefruit, Bamboo, Cashmere Suede, Sahara Spice AND, my personal favorite for fall, Pumpkin Chai! We are thrilled to add NEST to our line of products. We will have more holiday scents as the season approaches.

Stop by our showroom and take a look around. We pride ourselves on constantly changing and updating the showroom to keep things fresh. And as for pillows, we have a great selection on the floor or you can choose a fabric or two and custom order some for the cooler months. We love the fall and want to help make your home your favorite place to be!
